CrossFit Hampton Roads October Athlete of the Month

Leandro Matos

I feel like CFHR has been a crucial part of my life. The coaches, the community has been so kind, and accepted of my family and I. You all have been such an important part of my life; it’s going to be really hard finding another box like this.

How Long have you been doing CrossFit?

For about 10 years.

One of m buddies in Arizona invited my to a class. I left with my body wrecked, but I showed up the next day.

How long have you been at CFHR?

7 years

What makes you stay …  For CrossFit? At CFHR?

The community. The coaches, and members of CFHR are some of the best people I have met in my life.

I love how strategically random it can be. I love how we can lift a heavy barbell one day. And then go run 2-3 miles the next…. Shoot maybe both in the same day lol throwing in dumbbells, gymnastics, kettlebells, ropes… it’s just a big playground for adults lol

What have you learned since joining CFHR?

That your only competition is you. If we focus on ourselves, we will get better, even if it’s only one percent.

What CrossFit goal are you currently working towards?  Personal goal?

Callusing my mind, and trying to stay discipline. We all go through waves of not being motivated, or giving up easily. But if we stay discipline in the our routine, and continue to challenge ourselves, we will do great things.

Funniest/Best memory at CFHR?

Best memory would have to be going to the gym every Saturday. Having athletes from both the morning & afternoon classes made it a memorable experience.

Funniest memory would have to be Lindsey Balson flipping me off mid workout cause I caught her almost falling down from a box jump and I just point pointed at her, letting her know that I saw that…. I even have it on video!! haha

Proudest CrossFit moment?

Pushing thru that mental block and finally being able to do a Ring Muscle Up in the Open.

Favorite WOD or movement?

Barbell – Clean & Jerk/Snatch

Gymnastic – Toes to Bar/Bar Muscle Ups

What do you like to do outside of CrossFit?

EAT!! I love to eat!

What’s one piece of advice you would offer to a new CrossFitter?

Don’t be hesitant. Jump right in. The coaches, and the community are there to help you along the way, and they only want what’s best for you.
